In 2006 the Minnesota Legislature passed a new law to get these solutions and technologies into use, lowering the cost of treating diabetic wounds.
With medical costs growing at over 15% per year, the legislature is working with organizations, medical providers, insurance companies and diabetic patients to find new ways to address this problem.
Focusing on prevention is a new way of addressing diabetic wounds. This involves educating the public about this disease, including how to prevent it or manage it effectively once it starts.
New technologies are available in many cases but the health care payment system is not structured to take advantage of these new tools, even though they provide superior outcomes and lower overall cost to the system.
62A.3093, Minnesota Statutes 2006 is now in effect and gives this coverage to every Minnesota person with diabetes, no matter which health insurance plan they use.
Because of this legislation, we now have the tools to heal these wounds in a predictable time frame, eliminate hundreds of amputations each year, lower the cost of treatment and eliminate the need for prosthetics, while giving quality of life back to patients who have this disease.
