The cost of Diabetic Care in Minnesota
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
CMS cost figures for the treatment of a chronic diabetic wound are $40,300.00.
The Veteran’s Administration
The VA's cost of treating a chronic diabetic wound ranges from $45,000 to 75,000 depending on the type of patient and setting the patient is treated in.
These are the cost associated with normal treatment of a diabetic wound using standard treatment protocols. If the wound does not heal and the bones become infected, then additional costs of amputations incurred by the system along with the costs for prosthetics as a result of these amputations.
Surgical Costs:
$30,000 to $100,000 for each amputation
Prosthetic Costs:
$75,000 to $125,000 bi-annually
Diabetes is a huge problem in the United States (8 Billion Dollars). It is growing at a rate of 14% per year. The government is spending millions of dollars on education and preventionin an effort to control these costs to the system.
However, this does not address the problem of diabetics who already have a chronic wound. Until now there has been no good answer to treating these wounds. Three Percent (3%) of the diabetic population has a diabetic ulcer.
In the State of Minnesota there are 5,000 chronic diabetic ulcers patients walking around each year.
So you can see the scope of the problem we are addressing with our HMD “Pay-for-Performance” Wound Program™.
